Gutenberg & WordPress Glossary
+ New - This icon in the WordPress dashboard is a shortcut for adding new pages, posts, media, and any other post types you have on your site.
- Save Draft - This button will save the page you're working on as a draft (as opposed to publishing the page). When the page is published, this button will change to "Switch to draft," which will let you turn a published page back into a draft.
- Preview - This button will give you options to preview a page on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Using this preview option will give you a preview link that is different than the actual URL of the page. Do not use this preview link for linking to the page.
- Publish - This button will publish the page, making it live on the site and visible to users. If a page has already been published, this button will say "Update."
- Settings Panel - The settings panel is the side bar on the right ide of the Gutenberg editor that lets you control settings for individual pages. You can access the settings panel but clicking the settings button in the upper right corner, next to the Publish/Update button.Within the settings panel, there are two tabs. One called "Page", which includes the summary section, Yoast SEO information, featured images, and page attributes; blog posts also use this tab for categories and tags. And one tab called "Block", which includes any settings and content options for individual page blocks, when selected.
- Options Panel - The options panel is the side bar on the right side of the screen that lets you control options for how you view WordPress through the Gutenberg editor. You can access the options panel by selecting the three dots in the upper right corner of the Gutenberg editor.

- URL - The URL field is where you can edit the slug (the part of the URL that is unique to that page). Avoid changing URLs on pages that are already published unless absolutely necessary, in order to avoid creating broken links.
- Page Attributes / Parent Page - Page Attributes is a section within the Settings Panel that will allow you to assign a parent page. Doing this will nest the page's slug under the parent page. Ex: the URL /child-page/ would become /parent-page/child-page/.
- Add Title - The title field at the top of the Gutenberg builder is where you can add the administrative title for a page. This field is primarily an administrative label, but it may be used in other instances as a fallback name for the page, such as the H1 or the SEO title, if no other title is specified.
- Add Page Block - These two plus (+) icons allow you to add new page blocks. For more information on the specific types of page blocks available to you on your site, check out your Page Block Library.
- Yoast SEO / Page Metadata - Yoast SEO is where you can update your page's metadata. For more information on Yoast SEO and Metadata entry, check out this tutorial on how to write and add title tags & meta descriptions.
- All Pages - By going to Pages > All Pages, you will see every page available to you on your site. This will include pages that are set to draft or hidden from the sitemap.
- All Posts - By going to Posts > All Posts, you will see every blog post available to you on your site.
- Media Library - The Media Library is where all images, PDFs, and other files on your site live.
- Page Blocks - The page blocks section within the lefthand WordPress sidebar contains information about page block types available to you. This is where you can access, create, and edit Reusable blocks.
- Appearance > Menus - This section of the lefthand WordPress sidebar is where you can edit your site's menus.
- Options - Options is where other miscellaneous fields and content editing options live throughout your site. Each site will have a unique set of options available in this section, but you should see options to edit the site's logo, as well as footer information, and your social media men
